Over recent years patios have become more and more popular in British gardens and are now quite fashionable; to the extent that most new build properties include one in their spec.
Patio sizes vary enormously, as do shape and style; from the humble12′ x 12′ square slabbed area to extensive patios that run the entire length of the house. As we spend increasing amounts of our leisure time in our gardens, patios make an ideal additional area to relax and read, hold a barbeque or simply sit and enjoy birdsong ……. Over a glass of wine of course!
For those of you considering introducing a patio as a lovely addition to your home, there are my basic tips to consider that are worth exploring before you go ahead.
- View the site from all overlooking windows, imagining the view you want to create.
- Scour books and magazines for interesting shapes, layouts and materials.
- Work out where thoroughfares will run in relation to existing doors, sheds and garden.
- Mark out the areas with hosepipe and make mock-ups of feature from cardboard boxes. Then create a scale plan on paper.
- Collect samples of stone, bricks, gravel, paving and pebbles and match them against existing materials when wet and dry.
- Use a member of the Association of Professional Landscapers or the British Association of Landscape Industries for installation.
Maintenance
It’s fair to say, that patios like every other part of the garden and home do require a bit of a spring clean to brighten up and get them ready for the season.
First of all strip everything off it. Take the furniture out the way; move the pots and tubs off so that each and every slab is clear and ready to clean.
First of all, use your hose and your broom; dampen down the whole surface area and sweep everything clear.

After doing that, using a hose blast away any excess dirt, old leaves or rubbish. Then apply some patio cleaner, there are a variety of big brand names available, all over your slabs and patio. This will penetrate deep so that all the slime and the dirt washes away when you hose it off.
This is a great way to get some good results with dramatic visual effects very quickly.
Now you just sit down and relax!
