One item used frequently around our gardens is trellis; it is a very versatile product and can be used to perform a variety of tasks.
Origins
The word ‘trellis’ comes from the French ‘treillage’ which was the latticework frame used to support grapevines in the vineyards but trellis has a few more uses in the garden than the traditional plant support. Using either the traditional squares or diamond shaped latticework you can get creative in your garden with trellis!
Top off Fencing
For instance you can increase the height of a boundary fence by adding a trellis section to the top of your fence panels. This is a decorative means of giving added height and security without blocking any light using a solid panel. It’s also much more cost effective than replacing the whole fence. These types of trellis fence panels are available in a variety of shapes to give more interest than the usual straight edge, with a wavy, domed or concave edge.
Partition
In our section on Screening for the garden, we explain how trellis makes an excellent partition screen to section off parts of the garden. With different climbers growing through the trellis, it invites you to explore the space beyond. This is also a good way of making a smaller garden feel more spacious.
Walkway
Another great use for trellis panels isby fixing them horizontally to vertical panels or supports to create a shady walkway or sitting area. Again, with plants twining upand across the trellis, you can create a tranquil spot with dappled shade filtering through the latticework and leaves.
Support
Smaller trellis panels can be put to good use in the kitchen garden or greenhouse as a sturdy support for vegetables. Why not train courgettes, cucumbers, squashes etc to grow vertically on the trellis – this will also save space in a smaller garden. Scented climbing plants are ideal for training over trellis – sweet peas, honeysuckle or rambling roses.
Metal Trellis
Most commonly known as being the traditional wooden trellis; however metal trellis can make interesting decorative structures for the garden, an archway or arbour can look good on its own or clothed in climbing plants. The smaller, more ornate trellis panels look great on a bare wall or fence as outdoor artwork.
Give trellis a try!
