Here are a few simple tips on choosing your Christmas tree and treating it well so that it will treat you well.
- You can’t beat a real tree – keep it watered and you can pot it up in the New Year and with luck use it again next year.
- Buy the best quality you can afford – better to buy a small good quality, than a large poor quality.
- Buy a tree that holds its needles –Nordman or Scots are great.
- Check the tree is fresh – run your fingers down a branch spine, needles should remain in place.
- Avoid any tree with brown needles – it will let you down.
- Temporary – keep it in a container of water until you are ready to take it indoors.
- Transfer to protect – if the weather is very cold, avoid sudden temperature change by moving it in the garage overnight.
- Trim the trunk bottom – as you prepare to bring your tree inside cut approx. 1 inch off the bottom– this helps to absorb water.
- Choose your indoor spot carefully – avoid setting it adjacent to radiators or fires.
- Set it in a Container – place your tree in a container that will hold water – either buy a purpose made stand or create your own with a large bucket holding stones to fix the tree in place.
- Thirsty tree –the amount it drinks depends on its size and the room temperature; keep your container topped up with water.
- Decorate it well – choose your colour scheme and go for it.
Sit back and enjoy!
