Many people work hard on their garden to present beds and borders by planting a variety of plants to provide a range of colour and foliage throughout the year. However many don’t quite finish it off, there is nothing better to get a crisp finish to set off borders and lawns by laying a form of edging. Make the effort it will be well worth it.
Incorporate Edging
When designing a new garden or part of the garden, edging materials can be incorporated in the plan as a finishing touch to define areas and create an interesting look and texture.
Practical Value
Not only for aesthetics, garden and lawn edging also has practical value – a beautifully kept and regularly mown lawn can be let down by scruffy edges where it meets a path, patio or flower border so an edging strip will keep the lawn contained, looking neat and saves time on trimming the lawn edges after mowing.
Restrict Grass Roots
It will also help to avoid grass taking root in the borders between your shrubs and flowers, making additional weeding work. For a gravel path or driveway, edging material or decorative brickwork will keep the gravel off the lawn, which not only looks better but will avoid the gravel damaging the mower blades when mowing the lawn.
Materials
With a wide choice of materials, colours and textures to select from, lawn or border edging will bring an added dimension to your design.
- Natural wooden log roll or bamboo can be used on curved as well as straight edges.
- Wicker or woven edging is great for a cottage garden style, raised beds or a vegetable garden.
- Ornamentalmetal edging is ideal for paths, borders and lawn edging.
- Wooden sleepers or shaped brick edging in a variety of colours will all add character and interest to the garden.
Edging Strip
For an unseen divide between the lawn and flower bed or pathway use a flexible vertical edging strip which is easy to install and creates an instant clean dividing line between the lawn and flower bed or pathway. Usually made from plastic or aluminium, the edging strip is flexible so it is easy to follow curved or shaped sides. Available in a corrugated or smooth form, it is simply pushed down at the edge of the lawn until its flush with the top of the grass line.
Choose a style of garden edgingto suit your taste and define the lawn, paths, borders or vegetable beds.
Garden edging makes for easier maintenance and a tidy, attractive garden.
