October: Seasonal spooktacular

Noticing the leaves on trees put on a fiery spectacle as they change colour is one of my favourite signs of autumn. October has brought with it a drop in temperatures, which means it’s time to think about moving tender plants indoors or giving extra protection from chills and frosts that are on the way. There are also plants that are suited to these conditions, such as these top plants for frost pockets.

Make the most of your harvests this month by rustling up a tasty meal. This month is prime time to harvest pumpkins, so use them to make delicious pumpkin spice scones. The perfect accompaniment with a hot drink of a chilly afternoon.

Gardening tip of the month

Bring a burst of colour to your home by creating an autumnal bouquet.

Choose a container that matches the colour scheme which will add further interest to the bouquet. Opt for a copper can, basket container or even a pumpkin.

Start with a plant that has a bright colour to stand out against the foliage. Something like Pyracantha ‘Soleil d’Or’ with the clusters of bright berries.

Next choose something with delicate detail such as Daucus carota. This has lovely ornamental umbels of pink flowers that add a lovely lace-feel to the mix.

Choose ornamental grass or foliage that will give a soft look when used as a filler. The blue-grey leaves of Eucalyptus gunnii are a wonderful choice.

Though the weather may be getting colder, there’s no reason why our gardens can’t be full of warm and cosy colour. So, get started by using these top ten plants to inspire you.

With cooler chills setting in, it’s important to protect your plants before the frost arrives. Bringing your tender plants indoors will ensure your plants survive the autumn and winter seasons.
