July: Summer fun in the sun

Hi,

Somehow it’s July, and what a couple of weeks we’ve had with the weather! This is always an exciting time of the year when the kids are off school for summer and you’re able to enjoy the sunshine in the garden.

There’s plenty to do with the kids to get them involved and engaged with nature during summer. From planting up containers to making a mini garden sports day or having a picnic in the park, keep their imaginations running wild.

Thanks to everyone who tuned into my most recent Facebook Live Show, supported by Miracle-Gro®, where I showed my grow-your-own area and shared some tips on how to water and feed your garden.

This month there are plenty of events to look forward to. I’ll be appearing at RHS Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival on 8th July, Belvoir Castle Flower & Garden Show on 16th & 17th July, as well as RHS Tatton Park Flower Show on 24th July.

Until then, keep an eye on my Instagram and YouTube to keep updated with how my grow-your-own area is getting on.

Happy gardening!

David

Gardening tip of the month

Ensure your plants are getting the moisture they need through the sunnier months when containers are more prone to drying out.

Get hold of any sealed container with a couple of inches of water in the bottom to allow the plants to soak up the moisture they need to thrive. Spike some holes in the bottom of the bag to allow moisture in.

Take care of your body when watering hanging baskets by not filling up the watering can to the brim to make it easier to lift and pour when watering at a height. Instead fill it to a manageable level.

If you’re going on holiday, keep your houseplants happy by placing them in the bath and letting them soak up moisture for 10 minutes before you leave. Then position them out of direct sunlight.

For plants in containers, cut the bottom off a plastic bottle and spike some holes into the side. Remove the lid and plant the bottle upside down and fill the reservoir with water so it seeps into the soil.
