Easy to use as it comes with all the gear needed to process samples, not to sure on accuracy as I’ve got no equipment to confirm.

The instructions were easy to follow and the kit was easy to use, however the results were hard to read. The results didn’t really match any of the the colours on the chart and could have been interpreted differently depending on how you looked at it, sometimes with a huge difference in the outcome. I’m also not convinced of the accuracy. I tested an area of soil which has vigorous nettle growth, expecting a high Nitrogen reading, but according to the colour chart it was either depleted or deficient.

I hadn’t realised until I tried this product out on our allotment just how improverished the soil was. The pack was very easy to use and the instructions were clear. I can now safely add the nutrients in the right quantities for my vegetables.

Ok I put “accurate at five stars” although I have no actual way of knowing but the results were similar to what I’d expect and I tested potted soil so it was reasonably controlled. However it is quite hard to use. the capsules are filled with powder, you are supposed to open the capsules into a tiny chamber, which would be at least possible if they were only half filled, because you could open it then pour. I tried just clipping the top end of the capsule with scissors however I still managed to spill some of the powder because it is filled to the brim. The only thing I can think of to do is open it in a large container (where you can spill it) and then use a spatula or pour it in which you would have to probably do something with another type of testing kit anyway. However it is quite cheap so there is that to factor in.

I bought this specifically to test for phosphate. In principle I found the testing procedure well described in the instructions and fairly easy to carry out – as some have mentioned it is quite tricky to open the capsule of reagent and get it all into the test chamber without spilling. However I found it impossible to get results for the phosphate test. The powder reagent didn’t seem to dissolve properly leaving a cloudy test solution, and also tended to form a precipitate of dark/blue black flakes – this made it difficult/ impossible to do a colour match. I did contact the manufacturer and although they replied they said that they couldn’t help. It’s a US kit and while the basic kit was delivered at a reasonable price it seems impossible to get replacement reagent capsules delivered to the UK at a reasonable price.

It’s ok for giving you an idea of what’s going on in ordinary garden soil, which is what it’s sold for, but it does not give quantitative results, only a subjective ‘too little, enough, too much’ sort of guide, and only measures over a narrow range (for example pH only from 4.5 to 7.5), so wasn’t able to give me the information I needed to test the quality of a soil amendment (vermicompost) with much higher quantities of some nutrients and more potential pH variability. Getting the powder out of the capsules and into the reaction chamber without spilling is very tricky, but I liked having it already measured out.

Does the job just fine. Gives you a rough idea, but that’s all I was after.
