Description

Product Description

Socrates F1 cucumber seed by Mr. Fothergill’s. An improved ‘Petita’ type, the vigorous, strong plants produce numerous mini, bitter-free cues. An ‘all female’ variety best grown in a greenhouse or tunnel.

Useful Information: Vitamin C; Awarded the Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit

Sow and Grow: Sow: Indoors, February-May, 0.5 cm (1/4-inch) deep, on edge, in small pots of compost. Water well and place in a warm position. A temperature of 20-25 degree C (68-77 degree F) is ideal. Keep moist. Seedlings usually appear in 7-21 days. When plants have developed 3 or 4 leaves, transplant to 12 cm (5-inch) pots and grow on in cooler, but not cold conditions. Plant out, April-June, to large pots, growing bags, or into fertile, well-drained soil in the greenhouse border. Harvest: July-October.

Hints and Tips: Cucumbers do best in a humid atmosphere, so damp down greenhouse regularly. Once fruits form, regular feeding will ensure the best crops.

Care and Cultivation: Provide support and train plants up canes, strings or netting. Stop lateral growth, two leaves past each fruit. Pinch out growing tip when plants reach the roof. Male flowers (those without a swelling behind the flower) may occasionally form, especially if the plants become stressed. These should be removed.

There were 6 seeds in the packet. Im no gardener but was pleased that following the instructions after 5 days all the plants came through. Have now transplanted them into individual pots and hopefully the mini cucumbers will result.

Was disappointed as only 7 seed. Thought there would be more. But plants all growing well and healthy.

Prolific, tasty, crunchy and simply adored by neighbours to whom I give them – one eats them whole as a snack! And don’t be afraid of slicing and frying or putting them on the BBQ in thick slices. I was still picking in November 2018!

I bought these as all the garden centres were closed at the time. A bit disappointed to find out a miserly 6 seeds included, but pressed on and planted in my propagator. 3 weeks later, no signs of growth, despite properly looking after and everything else I planted growing within 7 days.2 months on and still nothing. I bought some seeds from my local garden centre 2 weeks ago when they reopened. The pack was 1/4 the price and contained 34 seeds. Even better, they ALL came up within a week.I have now emptied out the seed tray I bought on Amazon, clearly the seeds were defective/old.All in all a very poor experience, total waste of time and money.

These are brilliant cucumber seeds to grow in a polytunnel. This is the second year I’ve grown them. They germinate easily and produce many cucumbers per plant. Skins are not at all tough. Will continue to grow this variety.
