Sow and grow: Outdoors October-February, where they are to crop, 5 cm (2-inch) deep, directly into finely-prepared, well-cultivated, fertile soil, which has already been watered. To make the best use of space, sow seeds 23 cm (9-inch) apart, in a wide row in a zigzag pattern, leaving a space of 60 cm (2-feet) between each row. Seedlings usually appear in 14-24 days. Do not sow in very cold weather or when soil is waterlogged. Water well until plants are established. Harvest: June-August.
Hints and tips: Pinch out growing tips when first pods are approximately 1 cm (4-inch) long. This encourages an early crop and helps deter blackfly. Ideal for deep freezing.
Care and Cultivation: Sowings benefit from cloche protection in the early stages of growth or where grown in exposed locations. Protection from birds may be advisable when plants are young.
