Product Description

Sweet herb basil seed by Mr. Fothergill’s. Classic best-known basil. A very popular basil with large sweet leaves. Used in a huge range of Mediterranean dishes. An essential for the windowsill.

Plant Class: Half Hardy Annual (HHA).

Useful Information: Suitable for contained gardens; Herb garden

Sow and Grow: Sow and grow indoors for all year round crops. Sow 0.5 cm (1/4-inch) deep, in small pots of compost. Water well and place in a warm position. A temperature of 15-20 degree C (60-68 degree F) is ideal. Seedlings usually appear in 7-14 days. Grow on in cooler, but not cold conditions. For earlier outdoor crops, sow indoors March-May. Gradually accustom plants to outside conditions (avoid frosts), before planting out into warm, well-drained soil, 20 cm (8-inch) apart, during May-July. Alternatively, plants can be grown on a light windowsill. Or sow outdoors March-May for ease, where they are to crop, 0.5 cm (1/4-inch) deep, directly into finely-prepared, warm, well-drained soil, which has already been watered. Thin seedlings to 20 cm (8-inch) apart. For a continuous supply, make sowings at two to three week intervals. Harvest: Leaves are best picked immediately before use (outdoor crops from June).

Hints and Tips: For maximum flavour, leaves should be added to cooked dishes at the last minute. Remove flowers to prolong picking.

You can never have enough Basil! I’ve bought Mr Fotergills’ flower, herbs and veg seeds for donkeys years, and have never been disappointed. Reliable and great value for money.

I planted up a couple of 4-inch diameter pots using roughly half the seeds provided. I placed the pots in my south-facing kitchen window and the vast majority of the seeds have germinated and are growing well. After about a month, I am still some way off being able to harvest any leaves but the rate of growth is at least as good if not better than I expected.
