Description
Sow indoors, between February and May, to flower the same year, 0.5 cm (1/4-inch) deep, in a tray of compost. A temperature of 15-20 degrees Celsius (60-68 degrees Fahrenheit) is ideal. Keep moist. Seedlings usually appear in 14-21 days. Transplant them, 5 cm (2-inches) apart, to further trays when large enough to handle. Gradually accustom young plants to outside conditions, before planting out into moisture-retentive soil, from May to October, 25 cm (10-inch) apart, when frosts are over. Or, sow outdoors to flower the following year, between April and July, in a seed bed, 0.5 cm (1/4-inch) deep, into finely-prepared, moisture-retentive soil, which has already been watered. Thin seedlings to 5 cm (2-inches) apart, before planting out to flowering position in autumn. Plants are generally quite short-lived. Allow them to shed their seeds for further plants in subsequent years. Enjoy the flowers from May to July.
Hints and Tips: Bring wildlife into your garden: Much loved by pollen feeding insects, especially bees and some moths. The latter form an important food source for bats.
