The Thistlewood garden kneeler was supplied in a plastic bag that I am afraid is not recyclable in our area. My first impressions were of a good looking and well made product. It is a bit smaller than I was expecting but otherwise a promising start.Sadly, first impressions can be deceptive. As a garden kneeler it proved to be barely fit for purpose. Firstly, the padding does not have enough strength or body to support my weight whether it be kneeling or sitting. Secondly, the outer fabric is not waterproof and after a 15 minute stint on dew dampened grass the pad was quite wet. The water had soaked in and left the pad needing to be hung up to dry. It dried well and so far the fabric still looks pristine but it will require careful care to keep it that way. A little mud had also become attached to the face of the pad and I washed it off under the tap. It was clear at this point that water tends to soak into the fabric rather than ball up and run off.So why the three stars? Well, I am trying to be objective and while this pad is probably not for me it may have its uses. I think the size of this kneeler and the less than supportive padding mean that it is more suitable for a child or someone a lot smaller and lighter than I am. The absorbent outer fabric is again less of an issue if it is used as a seat pad or in drier conditions than my test allowed. I suppose one has the option to apply some kind of supplementary fabric waterproofing but equally why should one have to. One could even wrap it in a plastic bag I suppose. So sadly, for me something of a disappointment because I really needed a new kneeler. It will have its uses but I will need to be aware of its limitations and use it accordingly. On the plus side it looks beautiful and is very well made. It dries quickly and has so far proved easy to clean. However, to improve on 3 stars it would need better padding, better waterproofing and for me it needs to be 5-10 cm longer.

First impressions are of a quality looking product compared to your average foam kneeler. However at around £13 at the time of writing it needs to perform that much better than a foam pad – it gets close but not so far that I would be buying one – maybe as a gift but functionally it is a bit shorter than a standard kneeler which means less ‘shuffle’ room if moving or adjusting position – I am slim with ‘skinny legs’ but if you were a tad wider this may end up with one knee hanging off the side! In addition although I find the padding fine, it may not be enough for some. The cover is similar to ‘canvas-style’ bags that large garden items come in e.g. gazebos and whilst it is PU backed and thus water resistant on the inner side, the outer will still get soggy over time. Invariably mud and dirt will accumulate but this can be brushed or washed off. A secondary use my wife discovered was simply as a cushion for sitting on! On reflection the best thing about it is the colour – if you’re after a kneeler, there are better options out there frankly!
