Gardening through July
Hi ,
Summer is in full swing, and after such a bright, sunny spring, gardens up and down the country are bursting with colour and vitality. July brings sunshine, long days, and the chance to soak up your surroundings, whether sowing seeds, watering, or enjoying time outdoors.
Now’s the time to keep your garden looking its best with a bit of mid-season maintenance. Regular deadheading will encourage repeat flowering in bedding plants, roses, and perennials. A fortnightly liquid feed can give your containers and hanging baskets an extra boost, especially after heavy rain. Keep an eye out for pests like aphids, too. Check under leaves and act early to keep your plants thriving.
Every Saturday, my gardening columns in the Daily Mirror and Daily Express are packed with seasonal know-how. From quick garden wins to timely planting advice, there’s plenty to inspire and support your summer gardening. You can find my latest columns here.
There’s still time to catch me at a few fantastic garden events this summer. I’ll be sharing advice, stories, and hopefully some sunshine too! Here’s where I’ll be appearing next:
Wishing you a garden filled with colour, calm, and happy moments this July.
Happy gardening!
David

Gardening tip of the month
Berry Good Harvests
Summer fruits like strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries are ripening fast this month. Keep them healthy and productive with a few simple steps.

Pick Promptly
Harvest strawberries, raspberries, and other berries as soon as they ripen. Picking little and often keeps plants tidy, deters pests, and encourages more fruit.
Use clean hands or snips, and refrigerate any extras you can’t eat right away to keep them fresh.

Net to Protect
Birds can strip a berry patch overnight. Cover your crops with fine mesh netting, raised above the plants and pulled taut.
Make sure pollinators can still access any flowers, and remove the net when harvesting to avoid tangles or damage.

Mulch with Straw
A layer of straw beneath strawberries keeps fruits dry and clean while deterring slugs. It also helps soil stay cool and moist during summer heat.
For raspberries or blueberries, bark or compost mulch will provide similar benefits and reduce weeding.

Prune Old Canes
Once summer raspberries finish fruiting, cut those brown, woody canes to ground level. Tie in the new green canes, as they’ll produce next year’s harvest.
Pruning improves air circulation, keeps plants tidy, and supports better growth for the seasons ahead.
