Gardens and nature inspire us to do incredible things. Some of the worlds greatest thinkers, writers and poets have written thoughts and witticisms on beauty and inspiration they find within gardening and here are more of my favourites.

The tree which moves some to tears of joy is in the eyes of others only a green thing that stands in the way. Some see nature all ridicule and deformity… and some scarce see nature at all. But to the eyes of the man of imagination, nature is imagination itself. William Blake

Trees and plants always look like the people they live with, somehow. Zora Neale Hurston

There is always music amongst the trees in the garden, but our hearts must be very quiet to hear it.   Minnie Aumonier

We have quite enough to do weeding our own garden.   Belgian Proverb

Never say there is nothing beautiful in the world anymore. There is always something to make you wonder in the shape of a tree, the trembling of a leaf. Albert Schweitzer

Gardens are a form of autobiography.   Sydney Eddison

We must cultivate our own garden. When man was put in the garden of Eden he was put there so that he should work, which proves that man was not born to rest. Voltaire

The flower that smells the sweetest is shy and lowly. William Wordsworth

Flowers are restful to look at. They have neither emotions nor conflicts. Sigmund Freud

We never look deeply into the quality of a tree; we never really touch it, feel its solidity, its rough bark, and hear the sound that is part of the tree. Not the sound of wind through the leaves, not the breeze of a morning that flutters the leaves, but its own sound, the sound of the trunk and the silent sound of the roots. Jiddu Krishnamurti

If you want to be happy for a year, plant a garden; if you want to be happy for life, plant a tree.   English Proverb

Gardening is one of my enduring, favourite, and most rewarding pastimes. Jane Hawking

If you build up the soil with organic material, the plants will do just fine. John Harrison

There is not one blade of grass, there is no colour in this world that is not intended to make us rejoice.   John Calvin

Each blade of grass has its spot on earth whence it draws its life, its strength; and so is man rooted to the land from which he draws his faith together with his life.   Joseph Conrad

I have never had so many good ideas day after day as when I worked in the garden.   John Erskine

One of the most delightful things about a garden is the anticipation it provides.   W.E. Johns

It is utterly forbidden to be half-hearted about gardening. You have got to love your garden whether you like it or not.   W.C. Sellar & R.J. Yeatman

Gardening requires lots of water, most of it in the form of perspiration.   Lou Erickson

Gardens always mean something else; man absolutely uses one thing to say another.   Robert Harbison

Weather means more when you have a garden. There’s nothing like listening to a shower and thinking how it is soaking in around your green beans.   Marcelene Cox

More grows in the garden than the gardener sows.   Spanish Proverb

Knowing trees, I understand the meaning of patience. Knowing grass, I can appreciate persistence.  Hal Borland

Knowledge is like a garden: if it is not cultivated, it cannot be harvested.   Guinean Proverb

Deeds are fruits, words are only leaves.   Greek Proverbs

A wind has blown the rain away and blown the sky away and all the leaves away, and the trees stand. I think, I too, have known autumn too long.   E. E. Cummings

Flowers… are a proud assertion that a ray of beauty out values all the utilities of the world.   Ralph Waldo Emerson

Full many a flower is born to blush unseen.   James Joyce

Life is the flower for which love is the honey.   Victor Hugo

Flowers are the music of the ground. From earth’s lips spoken without sound.   Edwin Curran

Nature is new every morning, but its cycles are ancient, independent of all our anxieties, oblivious to our plans.   Barbara Cawthorne Crafton
