How to Grow a Window Box Full of Herbs!
Want to grow flavour-packed herbs right from your kitchen window? Join David Domoney, Chartered Horticulturist, as he reveals how to plant, care for, and enjoy fresh UK-grown herbs like Basil, Parsley, Oregano, and Leaf Sorrel from the comfort of your home.
Whether your windowsill faces north, south, east, or west, this episode shows you how to get the container, position, and care routine just right for healthy, delicious herbs all year round.
In This Video, You’ll Learn:
Best herbs for windowsills — including:
• Basil – heat-loving and perfect for south-facing sills
• Parsley – a cool-climate herb great for east-facing windows
• Oregano – Mediterranean flavour in a pot, loves sun
• ***** Leaf Sorrel – a tangy red-veined leaf for salads and sauces
Which direction your window faces matters:
• South-facing: ideal for Basil, Oregano, Sorrel
• East-facing: great for Parsley and cool-season herbs
• North-facing: consider Sorrel in summer, but supplement with grow lights
• West-facing: fine for all four, with good afternoon light
Container Must-Haves:
• Use pots with drainage holes to prevent waterlogging
• Add a grit layer or crocks at the base for airflow
• Use a peat-free, loam-based compost for nutrients and stability
• Place trays underneath to protect your sill from drips
How to Plant Up:
1. Choose a container at least 15–20 cm deep.
2. Fill with compost, leaving 2–3 cm at the top.
3. Plant herb plugs or sow seeds thinly.
4. Water gently and position in correct light.
5. Label herbs and rotate every few days to ensure even growth.
Maintenance Tips:
• Water in the morning when the top inch of compost feels dry
• Feed every 2 weeks with organic liquid fertiliser
• Pinch out basil tips to prevent flowering and encourage bushy growth
• Harvest little and often to promote regrowth
• Remove dried up or yellowing leaves to prevent disease
Expert Insight:
Herbs like Basil and Sorrel exhibit positive phototropism they grow toward the light. Rotate pots to ensure strong, balanced stems. Oregano’s thick stems use CAM photosynthesis, which conserves water, making it ideal for forgetful waterers.
