August: Enjoy the Summer Holidays

The summer holidays are finally here, so it’s time to get outdoors with the whole family. Whilst the weather hasn’t been as glorious as it was this time last year, the rain will keep UK gardens looking great.
On the 11th and 12th of August, you will find me at Shrewsbury Flower Show 2023. There you can enjoy plenty to entertain the whole family, including flora, food, music, and acrobatic displays, over a packed two-day event. And to round off each of those days, there will be fantastic fireworks displays to celebrate a perfect day spent in the great outdoors. So join me at Shrewsbury Flower Show, and make sure to get your tickets booked here.
And if you can’t make it to Shrewsbury, you can catch me in the gardening Heart of Cheshire, at Bridgemere Show Gardens on Sunday the 13th of August, celebrating with a Summer Garden Party. There will be food vendors, drinks to enjoy, and an exclusive talk from me on how to use your garden to make your summer drinks extra special. You really don’t want to miss out on this one, so make sure to get your tickets here.

Gardening tip of the month
Make yourself a delicious Lavender Collins cocktail to enjoy this August at your summer parties, or just to relax and bask in the sun with.

Cut your Flowers
Head out to your garden, and collect your sprigs of lavender. I suggest that you use about a 1/4 cup of flowers for every half a cup of water.
Pop them in a pot on the hob.
Get Boiling
Turn on your hob, and get the water up to boiling. Once it has been boiling for approximately 2-3 minutes, take it off the heat. Add a lid to the pot, and allow to cool for 20-30 minutes. Strain out the flowers, leaving just the lavender water.
Make your lavender syrup
Combine sugar and water together in a separate pan. Use an equal ratio of sugar to water, and heat on the hob until the sugar has completely dissolved. Combine this with your lavender mixture to make a lavender syrup.
Combine it all together
Fill up your glasses with ice and a slice. Measure 15-20ml of lavender syrup into each glass. Add 25-50ml of gin or leave out for mocktails.
Top up your glass with your choice of sparkling, tonic, or soda water, and enjoy!
