December: Dashing through the snow

Hi,

It’s that time already. The last month of 2022 has arrived. It may be cold and the days may be short, but we’ve got a new year to look forward to which means more opportunities to get back out into the garden and growing.

It was great to be back at the Ideal Home Show Christmas where I shared the magic of plants over Christmas, including orchids, poinsettias, and of course Christmas trees. If you’re looking for houseplants for Christmas, look no further.

When it comes to choosing your Christmas tree, here are some tips on how to pick the perfect one. Then, to keep it looking it’s best throughout the festive season, use these 5 top tips to maintain your Christmas tree.

For outdoor inspiration, check out my top ten plants for this month, and specifically for shrubs for winter shelter for wildlife, here are some of my top picks.

This month you can see me join Alan on Love Your Weekend on ITV on Sunday 11th and on Boxing Day where we’re getting festive and sharing tips on cosy New Year’s plans. In the meantime, to see more of the behind the scenes of my garden, take a look at my YouTube channel.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Gardening tip of the month

As an RSPB Ambassador, here are a few tips to get your garden bird ready with food, water, and plants that will keep them happy.

Kit out your garden with a variety of bird food, depending on the usual visitors. Seeds, suet or fatballs are all great contenders for birds.

Place the bird feeders somewhere quiet, safe, and sheltered. You can also hang them near roses to attract birds that will pick off any pests overwintering.

Keeping the feeders clean is important to stop diseases and infections spreading. In a bucket, use warm soapy water and a long bristled brush to scrub the feeders.

Remember to add fresh water daily so birds have a clean place to drink and bathe. Whether you have a bird bath or a dinner bowl for our flying friends to visit.
