Make the Most of Your Garden This September
Hi there,
September brings a welcome change of pace in the garden. After such a hot and dry summer, the return of cooler conditions and some much-needed rain will be appreciated by both gardeners and plants.
After such a hot and dry summer, some trees may drop their leaves earlier than usual, so it’s a good time to prepare your own leaf mould. Make a simple cage from wire mesh and posts, or collect damp leaves in bags with a few holes pierced in the sides. Leave them to break down naturally. After about a year, use the leaf mould as a mulch or soil improver, while finer material left longer can go into homemade potting mixes.
There’s plenty more seasonal inspiration in my latest blogs below. I’m looking at some key plants for this time of year, sharing advice on harvesting apples and pears, and exploring crops children can grow for their own school lunch boxes.
Step-by-Step Gardening is also on the road throughout September, bringing the series to life with practical demonstrations, seasonal advice, and live gardening questions at venues around the country. To find a Step-by-Step Gardening Live event near you, follow this link.
As always, I’m keen to hear what you would like to see more of in the newsletter, so do feel free to reply and share your ideas.
Enjoy your garden,
David
