Geraniums in Winter? Here's What Most Gardeners Get Wrong
Don’t let frost kill your bedding plants—learn how to overwinter geraniums, fuchsias & begonias for bigger, better plants next year.
As summer fades into autumn, it’s time to protect your bedding plants and prepare your garden for colder weather. With the right approach, many favourites can survive winter and come back stronger next year.
Which bedding plants can you save?
Not all bedding plants will overwinter, but these are worth saving:
Geraniums (Pelargoniums)
Fuchsias
Tuberous begonias
More tender plants like busy lizzies and petunias are less likely to survive.
How to overwinter bedding plants
The key is frost protection without too much heat:
Move plants before the first frost
Place in a frost-free, cool, bright space
Ideal locations:
Greenhouse
Conservatory
Unheated porch
Bright garage
Avoid warm indoor spots like windowsills above radiators.
Preparing plants before bringing them indoors
Check thoroughly for pests and diseases
Remove dead or damaged growth
Trim back old flowers and tidy the plant
Repot if needed, so roots can establish
Winter care tips
Keep compost lightly moist, not waterlogged
Ensure good airflow and ventilation
Avoid overheating—plants should “tick over” in semi-dormancy
Set up for next season
Come spring:
Take cuttings from fresh growth
Gradually reintroduce plants outdoors
Feed well to encourage strong growth and flowering
With this method, a simple bedding plant can become a long-term feature in your garden—year after year.

Plants featured: ‘Indian Summer Coralberry’, ‘Lime Marmalade’, ‘Obsidian’, Tiarella, Heucherella ‘Tapestry’, Festuca glauca, Geranium pratense ‘Boom Chocolatta’, & Hosta ‘Age of Gold’.
Step-by-Step Guide: Planting Spring Bulbs
I plant two spring bulb containers, sharing tips on planting depth, spacing, drainage, bulb quality & flowering time to create colourful displays.
Bulbs featured: Crocus chrysanthus ‘Ard Schenk’, Tulipa ‘Flaming Flag’, Muscari armeniacum, Narcissus ‘Tête à Tête’, Tulipa greigii ‘Trauttmansdorff’, Tulipa ‘Gudoshnik Double’, & Narcissus ‘Dutch Master’.
Job of the Month: Potatoes & Autumn Salad
September is still a great month for growing food. I plant potatoes in containers for a Christmas harvest & sow cut-and-come-again salad leaves for repeated crops into autumn.
Masterclass: Summer Pruning
I tidy late-summer plants after flowering, showing how to prune lavender, trim back catmint to encourage fresh growth & deadhead buddleja.
Growing Updates
I check the dahlias grown from tubers, see how my pumpkins have developed & share tips for even, healthy growth. I also tackle blackfly on gladioli without pesticides.
Step-by-Step Guide: Seed Collection
I show how to collect seeds from the garden, including when seedheads are ripe, how to dry & clean them, label envelopes & store seed correctly for future sowing.
